Before I tell you about today’s cards, I just want to say that I’m praying for all of those who are in the path of Hurricane Milton and for those whose lives have been turned upside down by Hurricane Helene. I watch the news in horror and feel so helpless when there’s so much need. A special shout out to my friend in Florida- Sunny, I hope you are safe!
Today’s cards…
I have always been drawn to desert scenery with gorgeous mesa’s, big tall saguaros, agaves and the like. I love how the colors change as the sun moves across the sky, casting shadows in the craggy rocks. So it was no surprise that when Lawn Fawn came out with their Critters in the Desert stamps, I had to have them as well as the coordinating dies and stencils. Yep, Lawn Fawn has started making coloring stencils to go with some of their stamp sets and they’re absolutely wonderful! Makes coloring these images super quick and easy.
Stencils make backgrounds easy
I’ve been busy making different backgrounds for these critters to populate. I used a Simon Hurley stencil set, Sedona Scene Maker, using Distress Oxide inks. These inks blend SO beautifully and I’m thankful that I discovered them and started another collection! 🙂 Seriously, these are dye and pigment inks fused together and the results are amazing.
I added the ground of the desert scene with brown card stock cut with Lawn Fawn’s Stitched Landscape dies. The Cactus Hillside Border die created the row of stitched cacti and agave. Black, white and metallic gold splatters were added to the entire background and allowed to dry.
This first card shows a sunset scene with a cute roadrunner, a fennec fox, snake and scorpion. The play on words is cute, between desert and dessert. I’ve always remembered that “dessert”, the yummy after-dinner treat, has two s’s…meaning it’s double good! Hey! Whatever works, right? And I’m sure there’s some spell-checkers reading this and agreeing with the roadrunner!
The images on this first card were colored using the Critters in the Desert coloring stencils and then accented with a white gel pen. I continued the scene on the inside, adding a tortoise carrying a cake , a cactus and some sentiments.
On my second card, I wanted a daytime scene with some bright sand and the sun peeking over the mesas. I used all of the same supplies as above, except that I used Ohuhu alcohol markers for the coloring. I omitted the metallic gold paint splatters on this one, just using black and white.
Talking critters are stinkin’ cute!
Critters in the Desert stamp set has some really cute accent words like “hiss”, “thanksss”, “meep meep”, “I’m all ears” and more. I just love how these words make the card cute and playful. I stamped “thanksss” in a word bubble from All the Speech Bubbles and used coordinating dies to cut it out.
The striped paper that frames this scene is from Lawn Fawn’s Really Rainbow paper collection which is available in both 6″x 6″ and 12″ x 12″.
